Inspiring hope, creating change
“Banis was one of the marvels of pulp publishing and penned an enormous volume of work.” Michael Bronski, Academic and Writer
Victor J. Banis, often hailed as the “Godfather of Gay Pulp Fiction,” was a prolific author who made significant contributions to LGBTQ+ literature. Born in Eaton, Ohio, Banis wrote over 200 books throughout his career, spanning genres from gay pulp fiction to gothic romances and historical novels. His most famous work is the “Man from C.A.M.P.” series. First published in 1966 by Greenleaf Classics, the series follows the adventures of gay secret agent named Jackie Holmes. This series was groundbreaking for its positive portrayal of a gay protagonist during a time when LGBTQ+ representation was scarce.
The Victor J. Banis Family Foundation was established to honor and preserve Banis’ legacy. This small, family-run nonprofit organization is dedicated to promoting his writings and encouraging aspiring writers. The foundation collects and archives Banis’ works, many of which were written under various pseudonyms such as Don Holliday, Jay Vickery, and Jan Alexander just to name a few. We also run initiatives like the “Agents of C.A.M.P.” program, which invites LGBTQ+ writers to submit their work for publication, continuing Banis’ mission of fostering inclusive literature.
In addition to preserving Banis’ literary contributions, the foundation also focuses on education and community engagement. We provide resources and information about Banis’ life and work, aiming to inspire new generations of writers and readers. The foundation’s efforts ensure that Banis’ pioneering work in LGBTQ+ fiction remains accessible and celebrated, highlighting the importance of diverse voices in literature.
